Bill M.'s Home Theatre Project (cont.)

My design for lighting ended up as 5 separate banks of lights with dimmers.

6 recessed canisters for the home theater end of the room

4 recessed canisters for the bar end of the room.

8 "eyeball"-style lights along the walls for indirect "theater lighting".

2 "eyeball-style" lights accent-lighting the equipment.

3 "eyeball-style" lights for the bar itself (provides a nice ambience for folks relaxing outside of the actual theatre area).

Electrical & Lighting ($920 )

The room measures 10 feet wide by 33 feet long and has a bar at the far end. I needed to add more light to the room which originally only had 2 incandescent light fixtures (one near either end). I wanted to create the effect of 2 rooms (bar and home theater) while maintaining the continuity and spaciousness of a single large space (the wife didn’t want the room to be or look small). This I would do in a major way later on with the ceiling, but I needed the lighting arrangement to accommodate a bar, a family room and a home theater.

(Tim's Note:  Bill has a good background in electrical work and so was confident in handling this end of the job himself.  If you are not  familiar with electrical, I strongly suggest that you hire a licensed electrician if your own theater requires new wiring or lighting)

This setup really doesn’t use up as much electricity as you might think. Seldom are more than 2 banks of lights on at any time and they are almost always dimmed to some degree.

The “theater lighting” eyeballs are IR remote controlled with a Lutron remote control dimmer switch (no getting up to turn on/ off the lights, and I can bring them up a little at a time after a movie so folks don’t go blind).

Additional electrical work included 2 new dedicated circuits for power to the audio and video equipment, each with its own line back to the box and completely separate from any other lines in the house.
