Check out Our Bargain Room and Blog: Tim's Thoughts

Bill M.'s Home Theatre Project (cont.)

(Tim’s note: if carpentry and woodworking aren’t your bag, we offer an excellent variety of component racks and stands from VTI, Bell’o, and Middle Atlantic, and we work closely with some very excellent custom cabinet-makers!)

Acoustical Treatment ($50)

Billm11.jpg (58671 bytes)I had 3 pieces of fiberglass panels (of various thickness and sizes) cut and beveled. I covered them with fabrics that would accent the room, using spray adhesive. I then mounted these in wooden frames, which I made to suit the boards, and hung them on the wood panel walls to reduce the reflected sounds (they look OK too).  This tightened the imaging of the front speakers and opened up the soundstage.  The room now sounds larger than it is.

I also covered some thicker pieces of fiberglass with material and put them in the lower corners of the room to act as bass traps.

Furniture ($150)

BillM02.jpg (49771 bytes)I designed and built most of the furniture in the room (except for the sectional sofa). The audio component rack, DVD racks, coffee tables and end tables were made from a combination of mesquite and oak hardwoods.

BillM04.jpg (54163 bytes)The audio rack is on castors and has 5 adjustable racks (currently only using 4 of them), a top and bottom shelf for a total of 7 component shelves.

I also built a couple of 7” risers for my front tower speakers. Because I needed to place the furniture close to the system than would be ideal, I was losing some of the overall sound that was being absorbed by this furniture.  By raising the speakers seven inches, I was able to compensate for this effect.

We will be replacing the existing sofa with a new one soon.
